One of the questions I’m asked the most as a Northern VA family photographer is, “Can you really get any good shots in 15mins?”

The answer is yes, but, let’s talk about why and how.

When it comes to working with young kids, flexibility is key. The downside of a mini session is it inherently lacks flexibility because of the short amount of time. The upside to working with me is my experience: I have been a mom for 11 years, a professional photographer for 8, a professional school photographer focusing on the under kindergarten crowd for 5, and I’m an elementary school substitute teacher.

Does that mean I can create miracles? Of course not. Kids are kids, and they might be tired from the car ride or just not feeling having their pictures taken. The good news is I work quickly and have a lot of energy. I just try to meet them where they are. Maybe someone needs you to hold them the entire time. At least it’s only 15 minutes! Maybe someone fell asleep in the car. Good thing those snuggling pictures are so so sweet. Maybe someone needs me to have my very best jokes at the ready. Well, I’m a bad joke teller but that’s usually pretty funny in itself.

Parenting is messy and sweet and heartwarming and heartbreaking. Your mini session could be any and all of those things, too. Either way, you’ll feel all the feelings when you look back on your photos years from now.
