The Best Summer Camps in Northern Virginia for 2026

Updated February 24, 2026.

If you’re like me, as a parent you are eagerly anticipating the start of summer. I can already hear my kid’s laughter while we make unforgettable memories, staying up late and sleeping in. Of all the activities available, one timeless tradition stands out: summer camps in Northern Virginia. Let’s dive in!

Disclaimer: I am copying and pasting what I receive from Northern Virginia summer camps who wish to be featured in this annual blog post. I have not personally explored any or all of them, nor do I personally endorse any or all.

Why Northern Virginia Summer Camps Matter

One of the key benefits of enrolling your child in summer camps in Northern Virginia is the opportunity for personal development. Beyond the classroom, children have the chance to explore new interests and hobbies, unlocking hidden talents and passions. Whether it’s arts and crafts, outdoor adventures, or sports, these camps provide a safe and nurturing environment for self-discovery.

Second, the social benefits of summer camps cannot be overstated. In a world increasingly dominated by screens, Northern Virginia summer camps offer a breath of fresh air, encouraging face-to-face interactions and the forging of genuine connections. Lifelong friendships often bloom in the midst of shared experiences and interests, creating a sense of camaraderie that extends far beyond the summer months.

Beyond the aforementioned perks, summer camps in Northern Virginia (and beyond!) provide a valuable respite for parents. This allows parents to balance work and family life while ensuring their children are making the most of their summer break. I’m not going to lie – I absolutely used to take some time for self care during a midsummer camp when my kids were younger.

What Makes a Summer Camp in Northern Virginia Special

What always surprises me about summer camps in Northern Virginia is their incredible diversity. Our region’s unique geography provides access to everything from mountain trails to historical sites, creating camp experiences you simply can’t find elsewhere.

Northern Virginia summer camps benefit from proximity to DC’s cultural institutions while maintaining access to beautiful natural settings. This means your child might build a robot in the morning and go hiking through native forest ecosystems in the afternoon!

Finding Your Perfect Camp Match

As a mom who’s navigated the Northern Virginia summer camp landscape, I understand the excitement (and occasional overwhelm) of the selection process. The perfect camp aligns with your child’s interests while stretching their comfort zone just enough to spark growth.

Whether your child thrives in structured environments or needs the freedom to explore, there’s a Northern Virginia summer camp that fits their personality perfectly. The key is starting your search early – the best camps fill quickly!

Theater & Performing Arts

The Little Theatre of Alexandria

Learn more: https://thelittletheatre.com/summer-camps/
Email: summercamps@thelittletheatre.com

Summer camp at the Little Theatre is all about encouraging children to use their imaginations. Through play and theater, campers improve skills they will use for the rest of their lives, including critical thinking, collaboration, and problem solving. Performing arts camps are excellent for building confidence and verbal skills. We provide an environment where campers feel safe to share their ideas and take risks. Our Northern Virginia summer camps give children the opportunity to bring their ideas to life, whether it’s through writing their own stories, creating new characters, putting on a show, or arts and crafts.

We understand that being in the spotlight can be intimidating for newcomers to the arts, and strive to create an environment where children feel safe to try new things. One of our favorite testimonials from a parent reads: “We liked that camp was an open space for the kids to share creative ideas freely. It’s important for kids to experience situations outside the home where they can and should speak up, and to know their ideas will be considered and they won’t be criticized.”

Now in its 18th year, LTA Summer Camp in Northern Virginia encourages children to use the power of their imaginations. Campers improve problem solving, communication, and collaborative skills through play and theater. Build confidence and verbal skills in a safe, welcoming environment!

Year after year, the feedback we get always focuses on our wonderful teaching staff. As one student said: “My absolute favorite thing about LTA are the instructors. They always put so much effort into their jobs and making it the best class/camp possible for their students. I don’t think I would love theater as much as I do now if I hadn’t had those experiences.”

Children love Ivybrook Academy’s Summer Camp in Northern Virginia because every day feels like an adventure designed just for them. Instead of traditional, product-focused activities, our camp invites children into a world of curiosity, creativity, and hands‑on discovery. Whether they’re exploring rainforest habitats, experimenting with art in a hundred different ways, cooking and tasting new foods, splashing through STEAM-based water play, building inventions inspired by their favorite stories, or “traveling” the world through music and cultural exploration, campers are joyfully immersed in experiences that honor their natural sense of wonder.

Each week is intentionally crafted to spark imagination, encourage independence, and celebrate the unique ways children learn. With an environment rooted in Montessori and Reggio Emilia principles, kids feel empowered, seen, and excited to dive into purposeful play—making every day of camp something they can’t wait to come back to.

What makes Ivybrook Academy’s Summer Camp in Northern Virginia truly unique is our blend of Montessori and Reggio Emilia philosophies, which transforms every moment into meaningful, child‑led learning. Instead of offering scripted activities or cookie‑cutter crafts, we create open‑ended experiences that empower children to explore, question, create, and discover at their own pace. Each themed week is intentionally designed to spark curiosity—from hands‑on sensory investigations and global cultural exploration to STEAM-rich water play, practical life cooking, and imaginative building inspired by beloved stories.

Our environment encourages independence, collaboration, and joyful experimentation, celebrating the process rather than the product. Children aren’t just participating in activities; they’re engaging in purposeful experiences that nurture confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning. It’s this thoughtful, whole‑child approach that makes our camp unlike any traditional summer program—and why our campers leave each day inspired, excited, and eager for more.

One thing we want every parent to know is that Ivybrook Academy’s Summer Camp in Northern Virgina is intentionally crafted to feel like the perfect balance of learning, exploration, and summertime joy. Our classrooms and outdoor spaces are thoughtfully prepared each day to spark curiosity and give children the freedom to follow their interests—whether that’s diving deeper into a STEAM challenge, experimenting with new art materials, or simply engaging in imaginative play with new friends.

Families can also feel confident knowing their child is in a nurturing, safe environment led by trained educators who understand child development and the Montessori–Reggio approach. We keep our groups small to ensure personalized attention and meaningful connections, and our predictable routines help even our youngest campers feel secure from the moment they arrive. While each week is packed with creativity and hands‑on fun, the heart of our program is simple: to honor the whole child. That means celebrating their ideas, empowering them to make choices, and giving them the space to discover who they are as learners.

Parents often tell us that their child comes home excited, confident, and full of stories—because camp at Ivybrook doesn’t just fill the day; it enriches it. It’s a place where children feel known, inspired, and encouraged to explore the world in ways that stay with them long after summer ends.

Since 2016, Summer Cove has been a staple for Northern Virginia parents of middle schoolers. Our 7-week program offers a variety of camps intended to engage any and all interests. Each week, we offer different summer camps in Northern Virginia that range from high energy, team-based camps to cooking/baking camps.

Summer Cove is a specialized camp program geared towards children in grades 6 – 9, an age group that we feel is seriously neglected when it comes to summer camps. Our program works to engage students in ways that encourage them to think outside of the box and give them a place where they can truly grow as a person.

Vine & Branches Childcare Center

At Vine & Branches, summer camp in Northern Virginia is more than just a way to fill the long days of summer – it’s a season of purpose, discovery, and joy. As a faith-based program, our Christian foundation isn’t an add-on; it’s woven intentionally into every part of the camp experience. From daily interactions to hands-on projects, children are encouraged to see the world through a lens of faith, compassion, and curiosity.

This year’s camp theme, The Great Global Adventure, invites Pre-K through 5th grade students to explore the wonders of God’s world and the diverse cultures that shape it. Campers dive into engaging, hands-on activities that spark creativity and critical thinking as they learn about global traditions, the natural world, and the ideas that have influenced our shared history. Through STEAM challenges and collaborative projects, children connect big concepts to real-world application in meaningful ways.

What truly sets our Northern Virginia summer camp apart is how we extend learning beyond our walls. We offer two field trips every week – including a weekly adventure to Atlantis Waterpark at Bull Run Park for classic summer fun, and an additional excursion tied directly to our weekly theme. Whether exploring cultural landmarks, nature preserves, or local organizations, our campers don’t just learn about the world – they experience it.

We intentionally incorporate service opportunities into our field trips, allowing children to give back to our immediate community while growing in empathy and leadership. By blending faith, service, exploration, and high-quality enrichment, our summer program creates a Northern Virginia summer camp experience that is both deeply rooted and expansively global.

At Vine & Branches, summer isn’t just about keeping kids busy – it’s about inspiring a lasting love of learning, nurturing cultural awareness, and helping children discover their place in God’s great, big world.

One of the things that truly sets our summer camp in Northern Virginia apart is that we offer a full-day camp experience specifically for rising Kindergarteners, grouped intentionally with other 4–5 year olds.

Rather than blending them into a wide elementary-age group, our youngest campers have their own dedicated cohort, allowing us to tailor the pace, activities, and expectations to their developmental stage.

For many families, summer before Kindergarten is a big transition season. Our program provides the perfect bridge – giving children the excitement of “big kid camp” while still honoring the unique needs of early childhood. They gain independence, practice problem-solving, and build friendships in a setting that feels safe, joyful, and intentionally designed just for them.

It’s not just a smaller version of our older camp – it’s a thoughtfully crafted experience that helps rising Kindergarteners step confidently into their next chapter.

Elevated Outcomes Inc.

Our mini-camp blends purposeful play, engaging activities, and real‑world practice to strengthen social skills, executive functioning, and communication—all in a fun, supportive environment. Children move through engaging, hands-on activities designed to intentionally strengthen their social skills and executive functioning. The activities sneak in social, communication, and executive functioning practice, allowing skills to grow organically- and without kids realizing they’re doing “work”.

A program like this stands out because it fills a gap that neither school nor traditional therapy fully covers. It blends purposeful skill‑building with the kind of play, movement, and hands‑on engagement that kids actually enjoy, making it both effective and appealing.

Our summer camp in Northern Virginia targets real‑world skills that often get overlooked. Social skills, communication, planning, flexibility, and problem‑solving are essential for daily life, but they aren’t always explicitly taught in school or therapy settings.

  • It uses play as the teaching tool. Instead of worksheets or lectures, kids learn through games, teamwork challenges, creative tasks, and movement—approaches that feel natural, motivating, and accessible for neurodivergent learners.
  • It’s structured and fun. Activities are intentionally designed to build specific skills, but they’re delivered in a way that feels like camp, not class. Kids stay engaged because the learning is embedded in high‑interest experiences.
  • It’s customized to the group. Activities shift based on age, ability, and the unique needs of the kids, ensuring that every child is challenged and supported at the right level.
  • It bridges the gap between school years. When school is out, many kids lose access to structured opportunities to practice social and executive functioning skills. This program keeps growth going in a low‑pressure, joyful environment.
  • It focuses on confidence and connection. Beyond skill practice, kids build friendships, feel successful, and experience positive social interactions—outcomes that matter just as much as the skills themselves.

Our Northern Virginia summer camp/company is aimed at supporting neurodivergent kids and teens and teaching the skills they need for life!

Kids LOVE summer camp in Northern Virginia at Mama Miss Art Studio because it feels less like “camp” and more like stepping into a colorful, creative wonderland where everyone is an artist. Each day is packed with hands-on, process-based projects inspired by bold contemporary artists, playful themes, and mixed-media exploration—think painting, sculpting, collage, design, and surprise materials that spark curiosity and imagination.

Campers are encouraged to take creative risks, follow their own ideas, and trust their instincts—there are no step-by-step copies and no “wrong” answers here. The studio atmosphere is joyful, welcoming, and confidence-building, with small group sizes and personalized guidance that help kids feel seen, supported, and proud of their work. By the end of the week, campers don’t just leave with amazing artwork—they leave with new friendships, creative confidence, and that magical feeling of “I made this, and it’s totally me.”

Mama Miss Art Studio Northern Virginia summer camps are unique because they are intentionally process-based, artist-inspired, and confidence-centered. Instead of following step-by-step projects where everyone ends up with the same result, campers explore real contemporary artists, experiment with high-quality materials, and make creative choices that reflect their own ideas and personalities. Each camp blends fine art concepts with playful exploration—mixing painting, sculpture, design, and mixed media in a way that feels exciting and empowering.

Small group sizes allow for individualized guidance, while the studio environment encourages risk-taking, collaboration, and creative independence. Campers aren’t just making art—they’re learning how to think like artists, trust their instincts, and celebrate what makes their work uniquely their own.

River Riders Outdoor Adventure Camp

Learn more: https://riverriders.com/outdoor-adventure-camp/ Facebook: River Riders Email: trips@riverriders.com Phone: 304-535-2663

At River Riders, our goal is for campers to put their phones down, unplug, and truly connect with nature and with the friends they make along the way. Camp is all about real experiences: laughing with new friends, cheering each other on through challenges, and spending full days outdoors instead of on screens. By adventuring together on the rivers, in the trees, and on the trails, campers build confidence, independence, and lasting friendships while discovering the beauty of the outdoors in the best way possible through adventure.

River Riders’ Outdoor Adventure Camp is a 5-day summer camp in Northern Virginia where campers choose their week anytime between June 15th and August 10th. Throughout the week, kids get fully immersed in outdoor adventure while building confidence, friendships, and outdoor skills—all led by experienced guides. Campers enjoy a packed schedule of activities including whitewater rafting on the Shenandoah River (Class I–III rapids, perfect for beginners), whitewater tubing on the Potomac River, and flatwater tubing on the Shenandoah River, where they can relax and float alongside other campers. They also take on the Aerial Adventure Park, climbing through obstacles and ziplining, plus the Canopy Zipline Tour, featuring an unforgettable 1,000-foot zipline across the Potomac River.

Campers round out the experience with kayaking and canoeing on the Potomac River, taking in views of the Harpers Ferry Bend. In addition, campers will enjoy a guided hike through historic Harpers Ferry, where they’ll explore the area with their camp guides and learn about the rich history right in our backyard. NEW this year, campers also get access to the Harpers Ferry Waterpark, an inflatable waterpark set on a clear blue water quarry—making it the ultimate summer adventure week.

This camp is unique because it offers a true, all-access adventure experience in one of the most iconic outdoor locations in the region. Campers aren’t just doing one or two activities—they’re rafting Class I–III rapids, tubing multiple rivers, ziplining 1,000 feet across the Potomac, climbing high ropes, kayaking, hiking historic Harpers Ferry, and now even experiencing a full inflatable waterpark. Very few camps can offer this variety of land, water, and aerial adventures in a single 5-day program.

What really sets it apart, though, is the intentional focus on unplugging. By encouraging campers to put their phones down and fully engage, you’re creating space for real friendships, confidence building, and personal growth. Campers bond through shared challenges, outdoor exploration, and nonstop movement—connecting with each other and nature in a way that feels exciting, not forced. Add in professional guides, beginner-friendly rivers, and the natural beauty and history of Harpers Ferry, and your camp becomes more than a summer activity—it’s a life-changing adventure week kids remember long after summer ends.

In March we have $25 OFF CAMP! This is an honorary Northern Virginia summer camp, just over the line in Harper’s Ferry.

Camp Under the Stars

Camp Under the Stars is an overnight Northern Virginia summer camp located in the Prince William National Forest in Dumfries, Virginia.

Our overnight camp program is designed for both first-time campers and those who have camped before. Camp activities include art, STEM, waterfall walks, campfire meals, archery, hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, library, yoga, and outside play.

Throughout camp programming, campers learn to treat each other with kindness, use empathy, include others, and take care of the natural world.

Our mission is to provide a supportive, inclusive camp community that values each child’s uniqueness, celebrates our differences, and respects nature and the planet.

Under the Stars Inc. was started in 2017 by a group of summer camp professionals, including our Executive Directors. With more than 100 years of camp experience combined, we began with one vision: creating a summer camp in Northern Virginia where all children can thrive. From there, we created our vision, mission, and values and started Camp Under the Stars.

We are a small summer camp in Northern Virginia by design. Having experience with camps of various sizes, we knew that the best way to follow our camp mission would be to create a camp that is small by design. As micro-schools are popping up across the US, we are leading the way as a micro-camp. We are a camp where:

  • All the camp staff know all the campers by name.
  • We know all of our campers and their families well enough to provide individualized support when needed.
  • There is plenty of time for activities that promote positive mental health, like yoga, mindfulness, and book time.
  • Flexibility is built into everything we do.
  • Adapting to new COVID regulations and precautions is done easily and with attention to detail.

Our camp program and each camp activity are developed intentionally. Our camp schedule is designed to meet the needs of our campers, including:

  • Nutritious meals and snacks with food alternatives always available.
  • Plenty of time to hike from one activity to the next.
  • Downtime, including yoga, mindfulness, and book time.
  • Additional camp staff available to offer support when needed.
  • Fun days, calm evenings, and enough time for a full night of sleep.

Our camp program is a great fit for younger campers. We provide support when needed, including:

  • Helping campers organize their clothes and laundry.
  • Ensuring campers are putting on clean clothes daily.
  • Helping campers brush or braid their hair.
  • Toothbrush parties to ensure everyone is brushing.
  • Sunscreen breaks through the day to ensure everyone is covered.
  • Water breaks often to ensure everyone is hydrated.
  • Individual support for bedwetting and accidents.
  • Closely monitoring each camper’s wellbeing throughout the day and providing support as needed.

Our Northern Virginia summer camp program is a great fit for apprehensive parents. Some of our camp staff are parents – we understand the apprehension! Our camp program is designed to provide parents with the updates they need to have a relaxing week at home. Our camp staff are happy to speak to parents on the phone while their child is at camp. We will give you an honest update on how your camper is doing at camp and what supports we are providing. We will take copious photos and videos to share with parents throughout the week.

We have highly qualified camp staff. Camp Under the Stars staff are adults from the DC metro area and all over the world. Camp staff go through a rigorous application process, extensive training, and background checks.

Many camp staff have years of experience working with children in a camp setting. Some are teachers, including special education, ESOL, and gifted education teachers. Some are former camp directors. We provide ongoing staff training throughout the year. Additionally, all of our camp staff are certified in first aid and CPR, at minimum. At Camp Under the Stars, our health cabin is staffed by a Nurse and/or Nurse Practitioner. Most of our camp nurses have years of experience working in health cabins at overnight camps.
