Make the Most of Summer in Loudoun

Hi! I’m Katherine, also known as KB, and I run the local Instagram and Facebook account @kbinloudoun. I’m here to help you, especially families with young kids, make the most of everything Loudoun County has to offer. And this summer, I’d love to help you create your very own personalized Loudoun County summer bucket list. Think local adventures, hidden gems, and ideas for all ages and budgets.

Summer in Loudoun is pure magic. Whether you’re picking farm-fresh berries, watching your kids giggle at a splash pad, or enjoying live music under the stars, there’s something special about this season. But if you’re anything like me, summer can slip by in a blur of sunscreen, snack wrappers, and forgotten plans. That’s where a Loudoun County summer bucket list comes in. It’s a simple way to stay intentional with your time and make meaningful memories along the way.

Start by Setting Your Summer Vibe

Before diving into a list of ideas, pause and think about the kind of summer you want. Are you hoping for something relaxed and low-key? Or are you craving local adventures and full weekends? Do you want to slow down and unplug with your family, or check out every event on the calendar?

This vision will help shape your Loudoun County summer bucket list. Knowing your goals up front makes it easier to say yes to the right things and no to the rest. Maybe your ideal summer includes trying new places, revisiting favorite spots, or simply surviving with little ones in tow. All of it counts.

Create a Local List with Variety

Once you know the vibe you’re going for, start brainstorming activities that align with it. I recommend breaking your Loudoun County summer bucket list into a few simple categories to make planning easier. For example, think about water fun, food outings, rainy day options, and memory-making experiences.

If your family loves to cool off, consider places like the AV Symington Aquatic Center, Franklin Park Pool, or the splash pad at One Loudoun. There are also great community pools worth checking out.

For something sweet and seasonal, head out to pick strawberries at Wegmeyer Farms or check the u-pick selections at Great Country Farms.

When you want to treat yourselves, there’s no shortage of delicious spots. Grab a soft serve sundae at Gruto’s, sip milkshakes from the Yard at One Loudoun, or make a trip to Tipped Cow Creamery in Purcellville. One of my personal favorites? Brusters in Leesburg.

There are also plenty of low-cost and free ways to soak up the season. You might catch a summer concert on a local town green (check One Loudoun, Village at Leesburg, etc.), stop by your nearest library for storytime and crafts, or stroll through First Friday in downtown Leesburg. If you enjoy hiking, Balls Bluff and Red Rock Wilderness Overlook in Leesburg have great local trails to explore.

Rainy days don’t have to be boring either. Kids love jumping around at Altitude Trampoline at Village at Leesburg or grab a new read or toy at Birch Tree Bookstore in Leesburg for a slower-paced outing. Wonder and Play Street Museum are full of interactive, hands-on exhibits and stations.

And then there are those “memory maker” moments. Capture a golden hour family photo at Morven Park. Plan a backyard campout complete with s’mores. Visit the Loudoun County Fair in late July.

Personalize It with Family Favorites

Once you’ve got a solid list, make it personal. Let each member of your family contribute an idea or two, even if they’re tiny. A pajama day, building a pillow fort, setting up a lemonade stand, or a movie night with popcorn on the floor can be just as memorable as a big outing.

And don’t forget to include a few things for yourself. That could be a solo coffee run, brunch with a friend, or an evening glass of wine at your favorite vineyard. Your summer should fill your cup, too.

Keep Your List Visible

A bucket list only works if you actually use it, so put it somewhere everyone can see. You could create a poster board and hang it in the kitchen, mark things off with stickers, or even make a digital version with Canva or Google Keep. Some families like using a mason jar filled with folded activity slips, pulling one at random when they need inspiration.

Need Ideas? Here Are My Own Loudoun County Summer Bucket List Picks
