If you’ve ever wondered whether a Disney cruise with kids is really as magical as it sounds, you’re going to love this post from guest author Joey Saari. As a military spouse, mom of two boys, and travel advisor with a passport full of stamps (including stints living in South Korea, Germany, and all across the U.S.), Joey knows a thing or two about making family travel both meaningful and manageable.
In this post, she shares what it’s really like to spend a day at sea on a Disney cruise, from room service pastries and Mickey waffles to kids’ clubs and Broadway-style shows. If you’ve been debating whether cruising is right for your family, especially with younger kids, Joey’s firsthand perspective is packed with helpful details, insider tips, and exactly the kind of real-life insight you won’t find on a brochure.
In my house, we’re big Disney fans. We make the trip down to Florida almost annually and every time we experience something new. But we’ve never done a cruise! So join me today and grab a cup of coffee (or soft-serve, if you want to set the mood), and keep reading. Joey’s about to show us how a Disney cruise can be just as magical for grown-ups as it is for little ones.

My family and I just got back from our most recent Disney Cruise and I’m still riding the wave of magic (and maybe a little soft-serve withdrawal). As a veteran, military spouse, and travel advisor with two young boys, I’ve planned and experienced many types of family vacations—but I’ve found that there’s nothing quite like being onboard a Disney Cruise. When families come to me for help planning vacation, a theme park is usually the first option that comes to mind. But when I explain that a Disney Cruise offers all the magic the kids are craving plus a pampering, luxurious experience for the adults—without the lines or the logistics—they’re sold.
So what makes a Disney Cruise with kids so special?
And what does a typical day at sea actually look like?
Disney sailings range from 3 nights to extended itineraries all over the world, including stops at tropical ports and days at sea. Sea days are often our favorites—they’re the perfect opportunity to plan a day with no plans.

Morning Routine: Starting the Day at Sea
We usually wake up in our stateroom (with a curtain dividing the kids’ sleeping space from ours—game changer!) Room service is included, so we fill out our breakfast request the night before and wake up to coffee and pastries delivered at the time we chose. Watching the sunrise over the ocean while sipping coffee in pajamas is my favorite way to start the day on a Disney cruise.
If you prefer a full breakfast? Head to the buffet for Mickey waffles, fresh fruit, eggs, and more. Pro tip: Keep an eye out for churro Mickey waffles—they’re a magical surprise when they make an appearance. You can also enjoy a sit-down breakfast in one of the main dining rooms.

The Ship is Your Playground
Once you’re fueled up, the ship is your playground. Kids can splash in the pools or toddler splash zones, fly down the waterslides, or watch a Disney movie on the massive outdoor screen. Prefer air conditioning? Use the Disney Cruise Line app to find activities like bingo, trivia, towel animal folding, animation classes, or character meet-and-greets with virtually no lines.
Extra Magic Onboard
Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique is onboard for magical makeovers (princesses and pirates welcome), and select sailings offer character dining experiences. One of our favorite parts? Catching newly released Disney movies in the onboard theaters. On our July cruise, we saw Lilo & Stitch, Elio, and Thunderbolts while they were still only in theaters on land. And if you still have a popcorn bucket from a previous sailing or a Disney park—bring it for discounted refills!

Lunch is a Breeze
Lunch is easy, too. Choose from quick-service pizza, burgers, tacos, or chicken tenders by the pool. Or enjoy a sit-down meal, room service, or the buffet. Don’t forget to end with a swirl of soft-serve—there’s no such thing as too much ice cream at sea.
Kids’ Clubs = Guilt-Free Grown-Up Time
After lunch, it’s kids’ club time! There’s a nursery for babies and toddlers (6 months to 3 years, reservations required), while kids 3–10 can explore the Oceaneer Club and Lab—connected themed spaces full of activities. For older kids, there are separate spaces: Edge for 11–14, and Vibe for 14–17. There are even scheduled social activities for the 18–20 age group!
My boys loved every minute in the kids’ clubs—from superhero missions in the Marvel area to flying the Millennium Falcon and hiding from Andy in the Toy Story playroom. If your child needs you, a Cast Member will message you directly in the app.
With the kids entertained, it’s time for adulting—Disney style. Whether you’re sipping wine at a tasting class, getting a massage at the spa, watching live sports in the pub, or relaxing by the adult-only pool, Disney Cruise Line makes sure grown-ups feel just as pampered as the kids.
There’s live music in the lounges, themed cocktail events, and the coziest deck chairs for catching up on a book—or a nap.

How Does Dining Work on a Disney Cruise?
Dinner on a Disney Cruise is an incredibly unique experience. You don’t need to make reservations as there are two dining times you could be assigned to, early seating around 5:45PM, and late seating around 8:15PM. You can request your time preference, but it is not always guaranteed. If you’re assigned late dining but worry it may not work well for your kids, take advantage of the ‘Dine and Play’ option—children are served promptly and then escorted to the kids’ club, giving adults the chance to enjoy a more relaxed, leisurely dinner.
You’ll be assigned a table number, and you’ll rotate through three themed dining rooms. From the gardens of Versailles to Arendelle to the Worlds of Marvel, dining on the ship is an interactive and immersive experience.
One of the best parts? Your servers rotate to each restaurant with you, getting to know your family’s preferences and making each meal personal. My kids have been spoiled with their favorite beverages waiting for them at the table, desserts delivered before they ask, and even having their food cut for them! If anyone has any food allergies or dietary needs, your servers will confirm them and ensure meals are safe and delicious. And if you have picky eaters, you will find kid-friendly favorites on the menu, but if you don’t see anything they will eat, just talk to your server and see what they can do.
Wondering if the food is actually good? Yes-it’s incredible, and I still think about some of the meals we had! As far as dress code, Disney requests “cruise casual”, so you’ll be fine in T-shirts, collared shirts, summer dresses; just no swimwear and tank tops. Some cruises include optional dress-up nights, perfect for capturing family photos with the ship’s professional photographers in the atrium. And of course, on pirate night the dress code is pirate!

Evening Entertainment to End the Day
To end the night, grab another popcorn and settle in for a Broadway-style show. The performances are top-notch, including Disney classics like Beauty and the Beast or original productions like The Golden Mickeys. Afterwards, many bars and lounges on board are open late, if you’re not ready to end the party just yet.
Then it’s back to your stateroom, where your host will have turned down the beds, left fresh towels and chocolates, and maybe even a fun towel animal. Another tip: If you ask your stateroom host on day one, they may be able to surprise your little ones with character-themed sheets. Just one more sprinkle of pixie dust to make it extra magical.
