Embarking on the journey of motherhood is both exhilarating and, let’s be honest, overwhelming. One of the most intimate aspects of this journey is feeding your newborn.
As a mom of two girls, I’ve danced this dance: my first, born seven weeks premature, couldn’t nurse. She was too small to latch and with her in the NICU it was nearly impossible to practice. My second became my little nursing champ, but like a lot of first-time nursing moms there was a huge learning curve. I often asked myself, “Shouldn’t this be easier?” Had I discovered the invaluable support of a Northern Virginia lactation consultant, I probably would have saved both of us a lot of tears.
My babies are far removed from those days, but many of my clients are not. Lactation consultants in Northern Virginia don’t just provide valuable support for first time moms or moms with newborns.

A Brief Stroll Through Lactation Consulting History
Breastfeeding is as old as humanity itself, but the formal profession of lactation consulting is relatively young. In the 1970s, amidst a resurgence of breastfeeding advocacy, the need for specialized support became evident. By 1985, the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) was established, setting rigorous standards and certifying professionals as IBCLCs (International Board Certified Lactation Consultants). These consultants are trained to address a myriad of breastfeeding challenges, ensuring moms and babies have the best start possible.
Why You Might Want to Consult a Northern Virginia IBCLC
Every mom’s breastfeeding journey is unique, and while some may experience smooth sailing, others might face hurdles that make the process stressful. This is where an IBCLC in Northern Virginia can be a game-changer. A lactation consultant in Northern Virginia can help with:
- Latch Issues – If your baby struggles to latch properly, it can lead to pain, frustration, and inadequate milk transfer.
- Milk Supply Concerns – Whether you’re worried about producing too little or too much milk, an IBCLC can help regulate supply and offer solutions tailored to you.
- Tongue and Lip Ties – Many babies have undiagnosed tongue or lip ties that make nursing difficult. A lactation consultant can assess and guide you through treatment options.
- Pumping and Bottle Feeding Support – If you plan to introduce a bottle or need to pump for work, a lactation consultant can help establish a plan that maintains your milk supply.
- Weaning and Beyond – Whether you’re transitioning to solid foods, weaning, or managing extended breastfeeding, an IBCLC provides invaluable support.

The pictures throughout this post are from my time with the Public Breastfeeding Awareness Project, which I find myself missing at the moment. My mission was simple: to promote beautiful imagery of breastfeeding in real life and especially positive public breastfeeding. My breastfeeding photography has been published in People Magazine, The Huffington Post, The Daily Mail, Redbook Magazine, Scary Mommy, The Leaky Boob, The Stir/Cafemom, and Babycenter, among others. Should we bring these sessions back?
