Let’s talk about irony: last week’s challenge was “cold” and it was warm here…and this week’s is
“low light” but we got snow! Which, as you might imagine, bounces quite a bit of light. I wondered out loud why Mother Nature didn’t want me to succeed in this weekly photo challenge.
Turns out, as one of my fellow photogs pointed out, there is actually a lot of low light gorgeousness to be found in the snow. I found these icicles buried in a small, leafless bush.
And may I just say, shooting in RAW has changed my life. I once read a quote, in the beginning of my photography journey and during my uber-impressionable days, something along the lines of “be such a good photographer to not need the power of raw.” I can’t remember who it was by or the entire line, but, I really held on to it as an excuse to shoot JPEG and convince myself that that was somehow secretly superior to RAW. I was wrong. That is not to say that the author is wrong, but that I didn’t fully understand what he was saying. This guide from SLR Lounge explained things to me in a visual way with words I can understand, and I feel like I’m seeing improvement already.
Oh, and one last bit of exciting news…yesterday I upgraded from my Rebel T1i to a Mark II!!! This picture was taken earlier in the week with my Rebel, though 😉

I’m surprised by that quote about raw; I’ve only come across messages encouraging the use of raw, and that’s what I do because it provides more latitude in post processing. And I’m jealous of your camera upgrade. 😉 I’ll be keeping on my my T1i for who knows how much longer. Have fun!
Blaire RingI don’t think the quote was to undermine the power of RAW, I think that’s where I misunderstood it 🙂 I think the idea is to always strive to get it right in camera and not need to rely on post processing to “fix” your pictures.
I love my Rebel and am definitely keeping it, at least for now – she is perfect for snapshots in JPEG around the house, and I don’t care about a little pop up flash 🙂 not sure what lens you’re shooting but I have the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 on her and it was a tremendous upgrade to the kit lens…just something to consider.

ValerieFirst of all…. YAY!!!!! Hope you love your new mark2! I upgraded from a XT to the M2 last spring… so happy I did. You image this week, is stunning. There is so much visual interest, from the ice to the composition, so fantastic!! And I would never know it was in low light, so you totally rocked the lighting!
