Here we are with Week 2 of the summer guest blogger series! You may have been wondering, before you bring home a new fur baby, what are some things you should consider? This list will help you figure out just that before bringing home a new dog!
WELCOME HOME FURBABY!
What household is complete without the pitter patter of little feet? Wait- is it two feet, four feet, or SIX feet making that pitter patter sound? If you want to add a four-legged friend to your family, consider some important conditions before bringing home Bailey the Beagle!
- Becoming a member of your family is a big change for a dog- whether it’s an 8-week-old puppy or a 5 year old rescue. They require a lot of attention and patience to make this transition. Consider how much time an adult can commit to being at home to ease your pup through this stressful change: does someone work from or stay at home? Grrrr-eat! This creates stability in those crucial first months, so your pup gets to know your family, learns the house rules, and feels safe and secure in their new home.
- Do you plan to crate train? Having your pup spend short (gradually increasing) periods of time in the crate while someone is home establishes their crate as a safe place just for them, not a punishment.
- Have a special toy or long-lasting treat (Kongs are great for many pups!) that is only given in the crate to make them look forward to crate time!
- Do you travel frequently? Will your pup have to be crated for long periods of time while you are at work? Make sure you have reliable back-up support so your pup doesn’t feel abandoned and has enough potty breaks and attention to keep them happy in your absence. Hiring a trustworthy pet care company can set your mind at ease when you can’t be with your pup. Check the company’s credentials and make sure you are comfortable that they will care for your furbaby like their own!
